Darkness Will Be As Light

Darkness Will Be As Light is a short anthem for SAB choir and piano with optional Oboe, Trumpet, and Strings. It was commissioned by Taylor Roland of Sunnylane UMC in Del City, Oklahoma and is based on Psalm 139:1-12. It also incorporates the Hyfrydol melody in the climax of the piece.

Program Note:

Darkness Will Be As Light is a piece dedicated to the lives lost to and changed by any catastrophic event humankind has seen. A sermon Pastor Aaron Krueger of Crown Heights Christian Church, OKC gave based on Psalm 139:1-12 inspired me. I remember being moved by these words, the notion that there is no escape from God’s vision. He can see where we’ve been, where we are, and where we are going, no matter how far we stray or purposefully flee from his guiding hand. I grew up Mormon and have since distanced myself from calling myself a Christian. However, Aaron’s words resonated with the spiritual Shinto-Buddhist part of me, and I finally found a piece of text I felt needed to be set to music. I hope it will bring listeners some peace in their ever-changing lives.
